The Royal Ashburn — sliced to perfection

A public golf course with an exclusive private club feel

By Sarah DiVito | March 16, 2010

When Wilson Paterson bought the property now known as The Royal Ashburn in 1959, it was his dream to build a world-class facility. For the past 48 years, Paterson has poured his heart into the facility, and the golfing community seems to agree that his vision has become a reality.

“From the moment you arrive at The Royal Ashburn, you are made to feel like you’re part of the club,” says general manager and Wilson’s son Scott Paterson. Staff members welcome you with a friendly hello, greeting you at your car when you arrive and assisting with your golf clubs. Next stop: the inviting clubhouse, which leaves you feeling like you’re a member of a prestigious private club.

Ranked among the Top 50 public courses in Canada, Paterson says, “Every golfer owes it to themselves to visit The Royal Ashburn.” A 40-minute drive from Toronto, The Royal Ashburn allows you to leave the hasty city life and city golf prices. Here, the green fees are affordable, with regular rates ranging between $65 to $85, with many packages including breakfast and dinner packages. Even though the club is predominantly a public golf course, memberships are offered on a full and partial basis.

“The avid golfer will love The Royal Ashburn, as it is a golf course designed by a golfer and built for golfers,” says Paterson. “All features of the course including tees, greens, bunkers, mounds and ponds are strategically placed to add interest and challenge to the player.” From the beautifully decorated and inviting clubhouse to the exquisitely manicured, mature tree-lined championship golf course, the Royal Ashburn is unquestionably a first-class facility. It’s sure to be a challenge for players of all abilities with five sets of tees that can be played from 4,970 yards to more than 7,098 yards from the back tees.

Instantly improving, the club also offers features such as full-service restaurants, a patio overlooking the gardens, and conference and banquet rooms. As well, The Royal Ashburn is the premier location for weddings, booked right through the summer months. Between their two garden chapels, terraces, banquet rooms and gardens, it is the spot to exchange vows and celebrate under a canopy of lights. •
