Living on and off the green

Sailing meets golfing on the Pacific coast

By Stephanie Maris | March 17, 2010

Nestled in between the pounding Pacific surf and rugged mountains is a small community that has dedicated itself to pursuing the perfect lifestyle. Here, golfers and sailors alike take advantage of their beautiful surroundings while enjoying a variety of luxury amenities and services.

Fairwinds is a 1,350-acre waterfront community that features the Fairwinds Golf Club, a 360-slip marina at Schooner Cove and a community recreation centre. Designed by renowned golf course architect Les Furber, the Fairwinds Golf Resort is known as one of the best courses in British Columbia. Golfers are provided with the full range of amenities: a clubhouse and lounge, private golf instruction at the Golf Academy, the latest wedges at the Fairwinds Golf Course, and, of course, the polished greens and manicured fairways that the 18-hole course is famous for.

Fairwinds caters to its guests from tee-time to post-18th drinks. “Great service is important to us,” confirms Paul Hodges, director of sales. “It starts from the time of booking. Golfers can book tee times and lessons online at our website, or contact our golf shop toll-free. Our service continues with the arrival, check-in, first tee greeting, our on-course assistants, through to the food and beverage options at the clubhouse after your round.”

The surrounding natural beauty is highlighted throughout the community. On the golf course, it isn’t uncommon to wait patiently for a deer to move out of range, and with many holes bordering the ocean itself, there’s an ever-present opportunity to marvel at a new view.

“We receive many comments on how beautiful the golf course is,” Hodges confirms. “It’s the connection to nature.”

Fairwinds is more than just a golf course, and more than just a golfing community. The resort takes advantage of all its natural surroundings, including the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Schooner Cove provides a secure, full-service marina to Fairwinds’ guests. In addition to providing a first-class home base to vessels up to 150 feet, the marina offers sailors the opportunity to take advantage of their golfing facilities. Aware of the space restrictions on the average vessel, Fairwinds provides free golf club rentals to their overnight marina stays with the purchase of a green fee.

As with the golf course and its casual wildlife, the marina offers a “wild aquarium” of sea lions, otters, seals and the occasional whale.

The only problem with the Fairwinds community is leaving — and, like with everything else, Fairwinds provides the perfect solution: Don’t. New real estate ventures are providing guests with the opportunity for a permanent stay.

The current development offerings are Bonnington Heights, offering a collection of 42 single-family lots, and RockCliffe Park. True to character the lots offer panoramic views, and integrate first-class luxury living with the natural beauty of the area. Designers are encouraged to work within the natural terrain, setting Fairwinds apart as a community that flows seamlessly into its natural surroundings.

Residents are offered a state-of-the-art health centre and members’ facility that maintains the community’s standard in luxury living with saunas, exercise rooms, hot tubs, and even an area to play billiards and cards. There is always an activity to embark on, and as the members of the Fairwinds community are all dedicated to the lifestyle the community promotes, there is always somebody to share with.

At Fairwinds, neighbors are friends, golf buddies and fellow fish story tellers. It’s a community made for people who want to get more out of life, so quite appropriately Fairwinds invites you to “Live Here, Live More.” •
