Jordan is often
defined by Petra, an archaeological wonder also known as one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World.” Few
realize, however, that Jordan has so much more majesty to offer.
There’s Jerash, one of the most well-preserved Greco-Roman cities in the world, dating back more than 6,500
years and still featuring exhilarating chariot races.
Or Amman, Jordan’s capital, fascinatingly situated between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. It
amalgamates modern architecture with ancient mystique.
The list continues. There’s Bethany, where John the Baptist baptized Jesus and Christianity was born.
Thousands make their pilgrimage from all over the world to become awash in the same waters that established
their faith. The 25-acre Baptism Archaeological Park features a visitor centre and 17 designated locations,
including Elijah’s Hill, where scripture says the prophet Elijah ascended to heaven long before John’s
arrival. No matter your background, there’s a sense of profound peace that comes from visiting Bethany (and
all faiths are welcome). However, for Christians, it’s an experience of a lifetime.
Wadi Rum leaves a mark as well — because of how incredibly unmarked it is. Virtually untouched by humanity,
T.E. Lawrence described Wadi Rum as “vast, echoing and god-like.” Get actively awestruck as you take a
four-by-four excursion, camel trek or horseback ride through Wadi Rum’s stupendous timelessness. Better
yet, camp overnight in the middle of the desert after you watch a sunset like no other while sipping on sweet
mint tea, completely surrounded by a still, sacred silence. Dinner can include exquisite Bedouin cuisine
serenaded by traditional live music, all under the stars.
Once enraptured by the boundlessness of Jordan’s natural and fantastic sights, you can come back down to
earth at Aqaba, the Red Sea resort that combines history with excellent hotels, sporting
activities and good shopping. It offers delightful balance to one’s cross-country trip.
But don’t get too settled before visiting a body of water even more worthy of your time: the Dead Sea. It is
widely regarded as one of the world’s most exquisite places, boasting a dense, rich cocktail of salts and
minerals that supply industry, agriculture, medicine and spa treatments with some of their finest products.
In fact, the Dead Sea is home to the largest open-air spa in the world, all at the lowest point on Earth at
more than 1,300 feet below sea level.
Imagine: All this in a country slightly larger than New Brunswick. There’s even more to the land, though.
Jordan’s richness is accentuated by its wonderful people distinguished by their incredible hospitality,
generosity, charm and warm smiles. Additionally, there’s a heart-lifting spirit of tolerance and appreciation
that contributes to Jordan’s flourishing, peaceful cultural climate.

But that’s not the only climate to be impressed by. Jordan’s Mediterranean weather is ideal for year-round
holidays — winter can get cool (5-10 C), but spring is mild and lush, fall is just as mild and the summer hot
and dry but not overbearing (26-32 C).
Plus, Jordan can be done with class and style. It offers myriad first-class resorts throughout the country
that boast a diverse range of amenities, world-renowned cuisine, numerous activities, and moreover, an
overall experience that inspires, motivates and rejuvenates. The aforementioned spa at the Dead Sea provides
revitalizing treatment with minerals that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Wadi Rum, as well,
makes camping as comfortable as possible. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the therapeutic hot springs in
Hammamat Ma’in.
Any other travel needs are also easily covered. Jordan is growing into a leader in sustainable tourism and
has an increasingly expanding infrastructure that makes it a great destination for meetings and conventions.
Multi-dimensional tourism and customized vacations are uncomplicated facets of the Jordan travel
experience.
All in all, the country has something to offer everyone. Nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, history buffs,
those looking for a rich cultural experience or luxury vacation, and many more types of people will be
spellbound by what Jordan presents. This is all without even mentioning Petra. Throw that in, and Jordan
makes a convincing case for being one of the best travel destinations on the planet. For attractions per
square kilometre, it very well may be. •
