Live Young Medical Clinic zeroes in on thebreadth of health and wellness, as well as the latest anti-aging treatments. More than a name, Live Young is a practice that can be employed by most people with surprisingly rapid results of improved appearance and physical health that can last a lifetime.

While aging is inevitable, how we age and how well we age is eminently manageable. Many factors contribute to and can accelerate the natural aging process; however, a more focused approach to aging, and intervention in health concerns caused by lifestyle choices, can effectively slow or turn back the aging clock, both internally and externally.

Dr. Maureen Sweeney, a medical practitioner for over 20 years, developed and runs a cutting-edge anti-aging clinic, Live Young Medical Services, just outside Victoria in Sidney, B.C. It’s the only clinic on Vancouver Island that provides both holistic wellness programs as well as a range of aesthetic treatments for women and men. Sweeney delivers a more comprehensive, overall approach to anti-aging whereby benefits are realized both from within as well as cosmetically.

After listening to the patients she treated for over 13 years as a general practitioner, Sweeney decided to turn her attention to anti-aging medicine, realizing a great need in the community. “I attended my first anti-aging conference in 2000, and I immediately knew that this was an essential direction for me to take in medicine, to create a clinic to provide the whole health and wellness package. I saw the need to set up a practice with the capacity to consider patient medical concerns as an integrated whole and to have the time to develop and communicate a comprehensive plan for evaluation and management. I became interested in the aesthetic part of anti-aging because many of the early practitioners that I
trained with in the U.S. were also incorporating non-surgical rejuvenation in their practices. This appealed to me because I always enjoyed the hands-on and procedural aspects of general medicine, and this gave me the opportunity to continue that as well as to cultivate my creative brain. There is a synergy between the two areas of anti-aging.”

At Live Young patients learn to achieve and maintain their ideal physical and mental conditioning in a variety of ways. As Sweeney points out, “The combination of holistic wellness and aesthetic treatments both address wellbeing; our dual system ensures that anyone who wishes to feel truly well and look their best will feel and function better and with greater confidence.” Patients focus on the importance of disease prevention as well as bio-identical hormone replacement therapies. Additionally, the Live Young team incorporates diet and exercise programs, customized for each patient, that include nutritional supplements and the management of aging-related issues regarding weight, sleep and stress.

“While anti-aging wellness is essentially future-oriented, patients also generally feel and function better within weeks of starting their customized program. Heightened energy, improved sleep patterns, elevated enthusiasm as well as enhanced personal and business relationships are typically ideals that most people regain by employing Live Young techniques,” explains Sweeney. “Essentially, we help patients ‘get their life back’; they are pleasantly surprised to discover that what they thought were symptoms and signs of ‘normal aging’ could actually be diminished or reversed.”

Live Young also offers the PhysioAge Composite, which integrates six biomarkers of aging and can effectively deliver a more precise reading of a patient’s physiological (biological) age. According to Sweeney, the composite analysis provides an additional depth of analysis of each patient’s overall health, compared to the traditional methods of screening. This testing is integrated with the usual screening to delve below the surface to determine biological age and the rate of aging, and helps gauge the effectiveness of the wellness plan over time. The goal is to detect disease, ideally before it occurs.

As Sweeney points out, “70 per cent of diseases are lifestyle-related, and 50 per cent of all diseases affecting men and women over age 50 can be eliminated; we are currently amidst an epidemic of preventable diseases related to aging, such as heart attacks and strokes, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers.”

In addition to the health and wellness treatments, Live Young offers an extensive choice of aesthetic treatments to assist patients in looking better as well as feeling confident about their appearance. These include medical peels, microdermabrasion, Botox, soft tissue fillers, Soft Lift, Latisse, and IPL and fractional laser treatments to reverse skin damage and visible aging. In general, Sweeney recommends a combination of Live Young programs and treatments for patients to achieve optimal results.

The Live Young Integrated Weight Loss and Maintenance program also provides patients with individually customized programs, comprising both diet and exercise methods as well as vital genetic analysis. Weight gain is a typical aging issue, and Live Young recognizes that there is no universal weight-loss method. Therefore the clinic also considers physiological and hormonal factors while developing the best plan for patients. “We can now also tailor programs based on genetic profiling in addition to the usual medical history, physical exam and traditional tests,” says Sweeney.

“My patients want to do all they can to keep healthy for as long as possible, and many also want to look their best because they are feeling so renewed and revitalized through our holistic treatments. Others opt to have anti-aging procedures to keep a youthful, restful, de-stressed appearance in a competitive world. At Live Young we offer the whole package, or just one or the other,” states Sweeney.

With the extensive and comprehensive range of treatments and customized programs at Live Young, regardless of gender, the objective remains the same for every client -— to leave the clinic with a new outlook on aging and overall wellness.

“Looking as good as you feel leads to superior personal confidence and wellbeing, which leads to greater happiness,” explains Sweeney. “Most people are not striving to look years younger, but all want to live longer and fuller, healthy lives. On the West Coast I find our patients want to look the best they can for their age, and be authentic and natural as well.  I can make that happen and I love seeing the results in people’s improved lives.”
