Greg Turner has some wonderful memories from
Christmas at the Coliseum.
His favourite is watching a 14-year-old girl, who once sold homemade Christmas cookies from a tiny kiosk,
blossom over the years into an artist and annual exhibitor featuring unique jewelry, clothing and her classic
cookies.
After 23 years of kicking off Christmas for Maritimers, that’s the wondrous spirit that thrives at Christmas
at the Coliseum. Christmas is about celebrating tradition, growth and love, and it’s all manifested in
Moncton from Nov. 26 to 28.
Turner is the producer of Christmas at the Coliseum — although the “Coliseum” is more of a complex — and he
started the event because he saw a need for a high-quality, one-of-a-kind exhibition featuring the work of
Canadian artisans. Starting with 100 artisans from the Maritime provinces, the number has grown to nearly 360
from across Canada. Moreover, 30,000-plus visitors now annually attend.
For an example of what to anticipate, Turner describes the premiere moments of entering the complex:
“First-time visitors will find themselves immersed into the sound, sights and smells of Christmas,” he says.
“This is ensured as the first displays they will encounter include an Olde Tyme Market featuring produce from
rural areas of New Brunswick, basket weaving, a real kitchen featuring a chocolatier, along with a fish
market featuring Maritime seafood.” Meanwhile, you’ll be embraced by live, seasonal music from Maritime
artists.
After this, the exploration of jewelry, clothing, pottery and home decor commences. Those feeling out of
place (ahem, men) can be pleasantly surprised by displays showcasing woodworking, leather goods and various
food displays, “just to name a few,” Turner teases.
Arrive early, because thousands rush to be the first to experience Christmas at the Coliseum. Among the
flocks are experienced shoppers who know many products are limited in supply and the early birds catch the
worm.
So be a bird that doesn’t fly south this winter. Head out to Moncton and jump-start Christmas in festive
style. •
