It helps
having the architect Alvar Aalto dedicate much of his art to the city, but beyond that Helsinki has always
been known for its design culture. The city on the southern shores of Finland has been chosen as World Design
Capital 2012. The lineup of events for the year include Open House Helsinki, a program that offers free
guided tours of the city’s most interesting spaces and architectural landmarks, as well as exhibitions,
lectures, events and workshops.
Recently, the
Finnish capital has also enhanced its dining options, adding produce-friendly delis, cafés and stores
(berries are a prominent ingredient) that easily fit the nation’s so-called “New Nordic Cuisine.” Even
equipped with a project manager for food culture strategy, Helsinki ambitiously aims to make 50 per cent of
the food at daycare centres organic by 2015.
With distinctive dining, contemporary designs and easy access to the rest of Scandinavia, the city of
Helsinki is swiftly becoming a globally important cultural destination. •
