Relaxation by the Bay

Indulge in a true West Coast experience

By Jamie Daw | July 8, 2011

Just a short drive away from Victoria’s Inner Harbour, Brentwood Bay Resort features a luxurious oceanfront experience that is one of a kind. Opened in 2004, this five-star boutique-like hotel has received the AAA Four Diamond Award three years in a row, along with being recognized as an Insiders’ Select Hotel, an award that is given to only the top one per cent out of 80,000 hotels worldwide by Expedia. “We are honoured by these accolades,” says Dan Behune, managing director at Brentwood Bay Resort. “At Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa, we are committed to providing a truly memorable guest experience. These awards acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our great team.” And that is exactly what you get — a relaxed, intimate getaway where everything is taken care of. Located minutes away from downtown Victoria’s museums, galleries, heritage attractions and restaurants, this four-season destination is in the heart of one of the fastest-growing wine regions in Western Canada.

With a full-service spa on-site, along with an oceanfront SeaGrille restaurant serving up local wine, seafood and produce, this resort caters to the finer things in life. The breakfasts at the SeaGrille are a great way to get your day started, with amazing morning views and brisk winds that travel for miles along the Pacific. For lunch, a stop at the Sushi and Sake Bar, where highly trained Japanese sushi chefs put together remarkable locally caught dishes, will truly bring a cultural West Coast experience to your getaway.

The resort is also a great location for corporate events and weddings. With five-star amenities and services available — including 33 guest rooms with king beds, whirlpool tubs and fireplaces, and a year-round outdoor heated pool and hot tub — the resort would make for a spectacular venue to be talked about and remembered for years to come. “The location couldn’t be better,” said Behune. “It is the gateway to adventure on the Saanich Peninsula and the Gulf Islands with some of the world’s best boating and kayaking right at your doorstep… This unique west-facing oceanfront location has some of the most spectacular sunsets on Vancouver Island.”

After visiting the resort, I noticed some unique real estate opportunities available. Spectacular “ocean villas” that have direct access to the marina and to all of the amenities the resort offers were for sale. “This is an unprecedented waterfront real estate investment opportunity,” says Behune. And as he told the Times Colonist in 2010, “Now we want to increase the economy of scale in the community and get more people living around here and make the place a world-class residential destination.”

With units priced at just over $1 million and only a handful remaining, investing in your own piece of this seaside sanctuary would be a great addition to your investment portfolio and for your enjoyment as well. “The floor-to-ceiling windows present an astonishing ocean vista the instant one enters the space,” says Ron Lea, the project’s lead architect. They have virtual tours available at oceanvillas.ca, along with all of the details and contact information.

As a top tourism destination in B.C., the resort is consistently recognized not only for its luxurious accommodations and unique experiences, but also for its environmentally focused leadership. “Tourism Victoria is proud to recognize Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa for their devotion to preserve the environment,” says Robert Gialloreto, president and CEO of Tourism Victoria. “They have gone above and beyond in their efforts to protect, revitalize and care for Brentwood Bay, the Saanich Inlet and the entire community. This award recognizes efforts to preserve the environment for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.” And with the OceanVillas project receiving the LEED Gold accolade, with green building in mind and sustainable practices in place, The Brentwood Bay Resort truly has the environment as a primary consideration when developing.

“We are honoured to receive this award,” says Behune, “At Brentwood Bay Lodge and Spa, we have considered environmental initiatives a keystone to our efforts from Day 1. We strive to minimize our impact and to preserve the natural beauty of our surroundings.” He continues, “We have pursued a commitment to teach our team to operate every day adhering to a triple bottom-line philosophy, ensuring environmental, social and economic sustainability. This type of recognition continually reminds us that our efforts are worthwhile.” As a member of the Canada Green Building Council some of the green initiatives at the resort include the extensive use of recycled building materials, FSC-certified wood materials to conserve natural resources and working with local initiatives to enhance the coastal habitat.

All in all, my experience at Brentwood Bay Resort was one that was relaxed and enjoyable. I would recommend visiting the resort to anyone looking to be catered to and for a flawless getaway to enjoy. The staff is friendly, professional and go out of their way to ensure that your time there is memorable. Word-of-mouth has truly allowed this resort to become the success that it is.
