It’s All In the Dress

Brandon Dwyer’s fun and elegant dresses are the life of the party

By Arta Ghanbari | December 7, 2010

Attainable luxury is the spirit of Brandon Dwyer’s Basch label. Basch collections are rightfully luxurious for two reasons — the garments aren’t mass-produced and the designs are impeccable. Confident women, this is your calling!

Now 24 years old, Dwyer has two flirty collections under his belt, has designed for Garage Clothing and was on the second season of Project Runway Canada. The Barrie, Ont.-born designer has a creative eye when it comes to creating clothing that brings out the personalities and strengths of women. In other words, if you want the spotlight, wearing a Basch dress is sure to get you there. “I try to think of what a girl would wear, what would make a girl feel sexy and elegant. But still something that’s wearable,” says Dwyer.

Who’s the sexy and elegant girl in the young designer’s life? His best friend Andy. “I design for her and her personality. She’s bubbly, outgoing, confident and sexy without trying to be out there. Natural confidence,” he says about Andy. Bright colours, surprising details and tailoring that’s flattering to the waist and hips embody every piece in his collections.

For spring/summer, he presented his collection at Toronto’s LG Fashion Week, where his designs were noticeably more established than in previous years. In addition to his signature dresses, pants, blazers and blouses were incorporated in the collection for an all-around playful and feminine, tailored-to-perfection look.

For now, Dwyer says he wants to stay away from big retailers and instead sell his pieces exclusively at smaller, trendy boutiques such as Canopy Blue and TNT in Toronto. As for his upcoming fall/winter collection, he tells us to “expect drama.”
