It’s spring, and by now it’s time to get rid of the
dinner plates with Santa Claus riding his sleigh and those side dishes of a snow-covered countryside.
You need tableware that pops with colour and screams, “Spring is here.” This year, it’s all about the
mix-and-matching and going beyond your kitchen décor comfort level. Having funky and colourful dinnerware is
essential, especially if you want your table to stand out this season by drawing your guests in.
Netherland designer Marcel Wanders originally worked on architectural and interior design projects, but
recently turned his attention to consumer home appliances, which include wonderful dinner plates.
What we’re seeing a lot of this spring and summer is lots of colour and unconventional patterns and
prints. And he has exactly these. Wanders has limited collections in various stores, but featured on
his Marcel Wanders Studio website are his “Patchwork plates.”
There is a series of 30 decorated plates, all differently coloured and patterned. All the plates are partly
printed and partly painted by hand. Wander’s patterns are supposed to be used in random combinations on
the table — for example, by having a circle breakfast plate on top of an under plate decorated with little
blue fish and a black and white foot sideplate.
His collection of under plates includes the above-mentioned vintage-looking blue and white fish pattern, and
a blue painted plate with a sketch of a white dog in the middle.
Meanwhile, his large main plates include a plate with a pattern of pretty red flowers on a white background
and a plate with its rim covered in stripes. The breakfast plates are extremely interesting and
out-of-the-box, with swirls, faces and what looks like to be a picture of a recipe.
The side plates are also fascinating and colourful with multi-coloured lines, a black and white comic-looking
foot, and a picture of a chicken and eggs.
If you don’t find these appetizing then Crate & Barrel have solid-colour dinner plates made out of
porcelain that add a pop of colour and some summer fun to your table.
And on the sunny side, the Hamptons Dinnerware and Loire Floral Plates in yellow, orange, green or aqua are
fabulous to layer on top and create an array of patterns and depth.•
