Math is often regarded by students as being one of the
more challenging academic subjects. To change this general opinion, a number of schools and colleges are
taking steps towards making math as easy and fun for students as possible.
Mathletes clubs, or math clubs, is one such initiative that encourages students to look at this subject from
a new perspective.
Extracurricular activities and academics go hand in hand, and both should be given high priority by a
student. Extracurricular activities include various sporting and non-sporting events for a student to choose
from.
Although they may not often be the first choice of clubs for students, mathletes clubs offer a number of
benefits to students who are comfortable with math as well as those who are not.
Math is a multifaceted subject that has a number of applications in occupational as well as practical life.
In order to make maximum use of the concepts of math it is first important to understand them
properly.
Although math is a standard classroom subject, the rigidity of the provincial program standards can sometimes
rush students along, forcing them to memorize the methodology rather than comprehending it on a deeper,
logical level.
The environment in a mathletes club is an informal one filled with fun and enjoyment. Here, students can
learn this subject in detail without worrying about their examination grades.
This creates a more relaxed environment for even those students who are uncomfortable with the subject,
allowing them to apply their logic and reasoning when solving a math problem.
In a math club students get to learn advanced concepts much earlier than they would in a traditional
classroom. This ensures that they are able to sharpen their math skills outside the classroom, thereby
enabling them to excel in examinations.
By enrolling in a math club, students also ensure that their motivation level for learning this subject does
not drop throughout their academic tenure.
Enrolling in a math club will also provide students with a low investment way of learning the concepts of
this subject. Generally, senior math club members teach freshmen, thereby enabling the latter to learn from
experienced individuals. The curriculum of the math club itself is designed to encourage logical thinking
instead of memorization.
Although math is sometimes perceived as a difficult and time-consuming subject by students, the benefits of
having conceptual and practical knowledge of this subject can open up many avenues in later life.
It is for this reason that participation in math club is highly recommended, even if — or especially if — a
student is not comfortable with the subject. In a math club students will learn the practical application of
math in daily life, thereby enabling them to succeed in their academic life as well as their career.•
