Don’t judge a Moleskine notebook by its cover — or do,
in the case of their colourful new Volant series.
Simple, yet versatile, notebooks resembling the present Moleskine notebooks have held invaluable sketches,
notes, stories and ideas of many beloved artists and thinkers, including Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso,
Ernest Hemingway and Bruce Chatwin, to name a few.
However, with the start of a new school year fast approaching, you don’t need to be an artisan (or an
aspiring one) to experience the enjoyment of carrying one this
September.
“The classic black notebook is still a fan favourite,” says Marco Beghin, Moleskine America president.
“Students love that they can use it in a café to jot down thoughts one day and in class for their homework
assignments the next.”
Even after its long and celebrated history, today Moleskine offers a broad range of notebooks, diaries and
city guides.
Cahiers are another popular choice, Beghin explains, because their cardboard cover makes them soft and
portable. Inside, a section of perforated pages also provides room for quick notes or
lists.
It really depends on personal preference, he says. “For both products, I think most students appreciate the
merits of a simple notebook that helps them stay in tune with their thoughts,” says
Beghin.
There are a lot of other reasons why the Moleskine notebook is helpful for school, he adds. “In part, we’ve
created products that fit in with student’s hectic lives without taking up too much space,” says Beghin. This
allows for students to mix and match products that suit their different classes and creative endeavours.
Whether used for taking notes or just for doodling and reflecting, students will stay organized, says
Beghin.
And although there is a strong collection of products for artists, Beghin adds there’s a Moleskine for
everyone.
“Our hope is that students and professionals in any specialization will find inspiration,” says Beghin. “We
have so many different products that students can really choose what suits them best.”
At the top of his “must haves” staples are the classic black notebook and planner. But for the student who is
looking for something vibrant and fun, Beghin recommends the lightweight Volant notebook, which comes in an
assortment of colours. For those wanting a simpler option, the cahier is an obvious pick, Beghin concludes.
“They’re very slim and agile and are great to store in your bag when you don’t have a lot of
space.”•
