Columbia International School is a co-ed
non-denominational school offering programs for students from Grades 1 through 12.
We welcome all students. Columbia was established in 1988 to provide an opportunity for all children living
in Japan to receive a top quality Western-style education that develops internationally minded students with
excellent learning skills that will afford them direct access to the finest English-speaking universities
throughout the world.
By combining the best aspects of the Asian education system with the best of the Western education system, we
have created a program that provides an excellent, challenging and rewarding education for all of our
students.
For each student we aim to foster personal growth, instill a sense of social awareness, and encourage respect
for achievement. We strive to develop students’ powers of critical thought, preparing them for the
demands of post-secondary education in the world’s finest universities as well as for life as international
people.
Recognizing the importance of personal development and self-esteem for success in life we provide students
with a variety of opportunities for achievement and personal fulfillment through academic studies and other
extracurricular pursuits.
Our goal is to ensure our graduates are internationally and culturally responsible citizens who are as
comfortable in Asia as they are in Western society.
Columbia International School uses the Ontario curriculum and is accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Graduates are awarded the Ontario
Secondary School Diploma.
The Western Association of Schools and Colleges from the United States also accredits Columbia. Columbia has
a high-quality teaching staff with more than 80% of the teachers being members of the Ontario College of
Teachers.
All of our teachers have bachelor’s degrees and education qualification — many with master’s
degrees.
Our multicultural student body, rich in language diversity, learn in a modern, technology-rich school that
has a one-to-one wireless laptop program complemented by a computer lab and computer stations throughout the
school.
Starting with the students, Columbia has a strong school community that has come together to create a great
