Children, especially infants and toddlers, are prone to health conditions such as colds,
flus and indigestion. It can be quite challenging for parents to maintain a healthy environment for their
children, especially when sending them to school every day.
The first step towards preserving the health of your children is to get them vaccinated properly.
Vaccinations given at the right time help strengthen the child's immune system, thereby reducing the risk of
ailments occurring in the future.
Proper and timely vaccinations ensure that your children are immune to a number of serious health conditions
that could otherwise occur. Some of the diseases that can be prevented with proper vaccination include flus,
tetanus, polio, measles, mumps and chicken pox.
Even after children have been vaccinated it is essential to maintain proper hygiene. While every parent
understands the need to give their children a daily bath or shower, it is important to instill the importance
of regular hand washing and tooth brushing from a young age.
The younger and more consistently this routine is established, the sooner the children will be willing to
take hygiene into their own (well-washed) hands. Teaching children to keep their fingers off of their faces
and out of their mouths also helps ward off viruses that are contagious by touch.
A healthy diet leads to a healthy lifestyle. Make sure that your child's diet includes the necessary
vitamins, protein and calcium. Proper food intake will help build up the child's immune system, and will also
enable the child to maintain a healthy weight. Keeping the child properly hydrated is also important for the
proper functioning of the immune system.
Along with all other efforts to create a healthy environment, physical activity should be incorporated in a child's daily routine. Light to moderate physical activity is good for the heart, muscles and bones, and also aids in proper digestion of food. Physical activities also act as a stress reliever for children, thereby resulting in their overall development.
Taking children for annual checkups is important, even
if they are completely healthy. During the annual checkups, physicians can check and diagnose for conditions
that otherwise show no symptoms. Furthermore, you can also get an updated list of all the recommended
vaccinations that are required for your child.
Children generally see parents as their role models; therefore it is important for you to follow a healthy
lifestyle as well. Eating right and going to bed on time, washing your hands properly, following a regular
exercise routine and following good personal hygiene are some of the steps that parents can take to instill
healthy habits in their child.
It is evident that parents play a crucial role in developing healthy habits in their children. Habits learned
during the early years are generally followed for the rest of a child’s lifetime. Furthermore, a healthy childhood also results in a strengthened immune
system, thereby lowering the risk of future diseases.
So make sure that your child eats well, gets enough physical exercise, is vaccinated on time and maintains
proper personal hygiene. These steps will not only make for a more enjoyable childhood (there is far more
time to play when you aren’t resting in bed!) but will also result in a more comfortable adulthood.•
